Nachu ward is in the dry side of Kiambu county. There are two seasons, the rainy and the dry season. During the rainy season, residents plant short rainy crops like maize, beans and potatoes. When the dry season comes, everything turns brown and grey.

Livestock farming, in form of pastoralism,is the main economic activity on the western side of Nachu ward. Herders graze alongside the Maasai community, and clashes are common because Maasai morans always want to steal from the Nachu residents. When such clashes occur, many people are left injured while others lose their lives.

Through food security programs, the residents of Nachu ward were dug dams to supply them with irrigation water. Due to the high sand content in the Nachu ward soil, many dams couldn’t retain water, and the so the dams didn’t change the food security situation as intended.

During drought, which is a common phenomenon, many residents are in risk of starvation and rely on food relief programs from the well-wishers and the national government.

Unemployment level in Nachu ward is very high, with majority of the residents living below one dollar a day. Many youths move to different counties in search of greener pastures, and eventually end up settling down in different counties. This is the part of the reason why Nachu ward remains sparsely populated.

Nachu ward has had no factories of any kind in the past. Recently, factories are interestingly coming up. There is also a government proposed industrial park in Gatune sub-location, which when finished will tentatively offer employment to so many locals.
